Post Best Augmented Reality Demo
This contest is now over, congrats James! pm me your preferred e-mail address and I'll get you your copy of FDT. Here's the winning entry:

http://forum.papervision3d.org/viewtopic.php?p=1275#p1275

You've probably seen all those sweet Papervision3D + Webcam demos thanks to the FlarToolKit. Also, if you've tried to start playing with the FlarToolKit on your own, you've probably wanted more than just a basic cube hovering on your sheet of paper. This competition aims to resolve all of that.

Rules:
  1. Create an Augmented Reality Demo
  2. Post a link to your demo (including source) as a response to this topic
  3. Enter by April 14th
  4. Voting from registered forum members will open on April 15th and close April 22nd
  5. The entry can target either Flash Player 9 or 10
  6. The entry must use Papervision3D
  7. Use this marker: http://pv3d.googlecode.com/files/PMarker.pdf
  8. You can make your own pattern from the marker or just use this one:
    http://pv3d.googlecode.com/files/p_marker.pat
  9. The entry can use FLARToolKit or anything other method of achieving "Augmented Reality" (I imagine everyone will use FLARToolKit)

For voting purposes, it's probably best to post a video of your Augmented Reality in action, but it is not required for you entry.

Prizes:
The winner will receive one copy of FDT Enterprise Edition valued at $779.00

Please post any questions as a response to this thread.

I'd like to thank FDT for sponsoring this competition. If you haven't heard, they're releasing MXML support in FDT this month which is going to be huge!

Unfortunately I can not take part in the contest since I can not release the code, however I hope it is amusing for the others :)

But maybe you can point out why yours runs in this acceptable smooth manner ;)

Generally the examples provided with flartoolkit run great. Mine runs a bit slow mainly because of the complex relatively high poly animated dae object.

Important things to look after are:
1. Use simple 3d object
2. Buy a good webcam, mine is cheap and does not provide good FPS. I saw the same site on a macbook webcam and it was a lot better.
3. Light strongly affects the webcam performance
4. As John mentioned print on some hard surface, or as i did glue something on the bottom of the paper. If you distort/bend the paper it can not be recognised.
5. The video capture process eats CPU too so generally most demos look better in real life than on videos.

I consider about this myself some days ago. Are there any words from the FLARToolkit-Staff or is there a Topic somewhere wich wecam is especially good for this?

/Edit: Sorry, I thought that could be relevant to the interest of others in this topic

any decent 640x480 30fps webcam should do. Please contact me on PM if you have any more question since we flooded this topic.

@John feel free to move/delete my comments which are not relevant.

Post Re: Best Augmented Reality Demo
I've been meswing around with John's examples just to get a feel for things but no matter what I do I can't get the movie running at more than 1 fps :(

My demo uses a 20 triangle Mesh with a png BitmapMaterial. My camera is a Phillips SPC900NC 30fps - a "good" webcam I believe.
My PC is a modest 3.0Ghz 2G RAM Win XP but surely that should still be enough to run at more than 1 fps?

Any suggestions?

[EDIT I guess I should have posted this in the FLARToolkit forum. Sorry! ]
[ I have now]

one entry per user?
All source code MUST be revealed even if its not in relation to the interaction of papervision and FLART?
Use of external applets? java? or must the entire project be encompased in FLART and the flash player?
the demo MUST be useable in all of its functions to all of the judges?
i work with some, not unusual hardware, but unusual to the average graffics and 3d programmer.
thanks for your time, i cant wait to see what people come up with.
